Georgetown shopping

Georgetown is the capital of the district of Exuma. It is built around a Main Street that circles Lake Victoria and has a number of restaurants, hotels and other services.    There are a couple of well stocked, if small, grocery stores, a hardware store, several liquor stores, a gas station, 24 hour ATMs and several government offices including the tourist office.   Ferries and water taxis leave from the main dock.  Boat rentals are available at Minn's.

For tourist shopping there are a handful of great options.  The straw market is operated as a cooperative by 6 women and sells a variety of straw hats, purses, T shirts and other items. They are often weaving on site.  Across the street is a little dress and Bahama shirt store.   A  bit further along is The Sand Piper Craft and Gift shop -- a great store that is also well worth a visit.  The owner has a really good buying eye and the dresses, shirts and ceramics are all beautiful.  They also sell books, maps and other interesting tourist keepsakes.

The bar at the Peace and Plenty hotel is a popular watering spot for locals and tourists. It has a cosy English pub feel, with a  beautiful view over the ocean on one side and the town on the other, depending on where you're sitting.
