Rolle Town Tombs

About 7 miles south of Georgetown is the quiet settlement of Rolletown.   The site of the tombs is well signed from the main highway.  The tombs date back to the loyalist era and belong to Ann McKay, who died at aged 26, and her newborn son.  There is a poignant inscription on hers, the largest monument.   Her husband, Alexander McKay, died just 2 years later in 1794.  Down the hill is the Rolletown cemetery where generations of Rolles are interred....

If you like to hike, the trails of Stocking Island are incredible.    The island itself acts as a natural barrier to Georgetown harbour and is about 6 km (3 1/2 miles) long from tip to tip.

What makes this hike so incredible is the variety of the terrain, from long expanses of surf beach, to hidden coves to sand dunes to salt flats to shaded paths under a full canopy of dry tropical is a photographer's dream.

There is a navy beacon mid-island that operated as a m...

What are the best things to do on a week vacation to Exuma?

Part of the fun of Exuma is just exploring and losing track of time.

For those that want (or need) a plan, here is our check list for a week long visit:

Go to Stocking Island - half day or full day

Fresh conch salad served right on the beach.  Feed the stingrays, play volleyball and enjoy some beer and BBQ at the laid-back and iconic Chat & Chill beach bar.    Pay the water taxi a few extra bucks and have them swing you...

Beautifully shot - see some of our favourite places around Exuma.  Simply Beautiful!

Even if you have visited them many times, it is hard not to smile when you see Exuma's famous swimming pigs.

Pig Beach is usually combined with other stops including seeing Iguana beach, starfish bay, the Blow Hole and on full day tours you can also see the sunken drug plane, Thunderball Grotto and swimming with nurse sharks.

Whether you go for a half day or a full day these are about the most fun tours we have found anywhere in the world and your biggest problem will be sorting thro...

Just West of George Town, The Fish Fry is a collection of little restaurants that cook up some of the best food on the island.

The Fish Fry is low key, authentic and memorable.  It is as much for locals as for tourists and is central to the Exuma experience.

There are more than ten little restaurants serving fresh grilled and fried seafood, meats and other tasty Bahamian dishes.   Charlie's does a great take way pizza.

A few are open for breakfast and lunch.   Most get...

Just after the bridge on to Little Exuma is literally the smallest church in the Bahamas, St Christopher's.

It is a private church built by the Fitzgerald family in 1939 from wood salvaged from a shipwreck on nearby Long Island.    The mortar was made from ground conch and lime from The Ferry area.

Makes a great photo while you drive by...but don't go too close there is a family dog that doesn't like visitors!

Stromatolites are the oldest living fossils on Earth, dating back 3.5 billion years.  They were thought to be long extinct until discovered in Shark Bay, Australia in 1959. More recently they have been discovered in a few other places including the Exumas.   They are significant as they are believed to be one of the first organisms to create oxygen on earth by means of photosynthesis.  Today, they only exist in relatively extreme and unusual ocean environments.  The secret in the E...

Almost all of the best things to do in Exuma involve water - so planning around high and low tides may be necessary, but the information is tricky to find.

Here is what we use - I would not use this for navigation....but handy to know tides for beach trekking or fishing.
